Hello & Welcome!
'horticultural how-to and woo-woo'

A WAY TO GARDEN is the latest horticultural incarnation of me, Margaret Roach, birthed in March 2008 with my own words as its primary DNA, mingled with ideas shared in weekly expert interviews.

Since April 2020, I have been the garden columnist for “The New York Times,” where I began my journalism career decades ago. I host a public-radio podcast; I also teach online, plus hold tours at my 2.3-acre Hudson Valley (NY) Zone 6A garden, and always say no to chemicals and yes to great plants.

I hope all gardeners will become water gardeners, too, in support of our precious and under-pressure amphibians. A new @nytimes garden column with @arcprotects and @humanegardener … and our charismatic, fascinating frog and salamander friends. Gift link in bio.

In all the decades I have lived with dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) I have always been charmed how these giant trees have such tiny seed cones, the female cones. Until yesterday I never thought about where the pollen comes from — where the male cones are. And then I saw them, oodles of spikes of tiny spent male cones on the ground. I collected some of each to bring inside and admire, to nudge myself to slow down and look beyond the obvious and ask questions and find answers (thanks @nedfriedman and @letsbotanize for recent reminders that I needed).

Peony season isn’t just about those big fancy flowers. #signsoflife

Mr. And Mrs. Wood Duck just landed in the backyard water garden, the first ducks to ever find it in all these years. Have had minks and bobcats and everybody else imaginable use it, even a bear who sat in it like a hot tub once, but never ducks before. And look at his fancy outfit!

Bigfoot (well, a black bear who apparently had insomnia) took down the bird feeders and twisted the metal poles to the ground last night. Lots of adorable footprints in the snow. So much for hibernation (and for the poles); maybe he or she has been reading the headlines, too, and just can’t sleep. Sorry birds.
