Saving seeds from Squash

I have an amazing green grocer near my house and they have a constant variety of interesting squashes that I want to grow for myself. I think I should be able to save the seeds but I am not sure how…do I have to dry them (my first batch molded and I threw them away) ? Is there an age limit? Other special tricks?
