Thanks to all responders. I took a good hard look at what was causing the shade – a white pine that was way too big for the spot – and decided to get rid of it. And then I went out and bought a robusta juniper which has a lovely gnarly shape and shouldn’t get too big too soon. Once the big pine is gone i’ll have lots of other fun choices.
