There is a hybrid group of magnolias which are very compact (from 8 – 15 feet in height) which Michael Dirr (the great tree authority) refers to as the Little Girl Hybrids. They have "girl" names like Betty, Susan, Ann, etc. I like Betty or Susan (which are purplish). You might like to look at these.
