You could try the completely not-organic plastic mulches (recycled tires); I’ve heard they resist washing away by rain but I could be wrong. Or if you want to be really organic and historic, find a supply of crushed oyster shells. They aren’t slick in the rain and while the finest particles might be washed around, most of it should stay in place. And you’ll be able to see the path at night!
