I’ve got an idea that will require lots of veggies/fruits that are delicious when eaten straight off the vine/plant. So far I’ve got these on my list: strawberries, baby carrots, cherry and grape tomatoes, edamame, sugar snap peas and snow peas. This will be growing in pots so they need to be fairly compact varieties. Anyone got any other ideas for delicious veggies straight off the plant?
I’d also like some flowers that would be good companions to these edibles.July 27, 2010 at 12:44 am #29550AnonymousInactive
I often munch on the lettuce and kale when I am in the garden. If you don’t need to stick with annuals, you could try blueberries, cranberries and juneberries (Amelanchier). Also ground cherries are something that I grow just for eating while I am out in the yard.July 28, 2010 at 3:15 am #29551AnonymousInactive
It doesn’t have to be annuals, as long as they are fairly hardy. I don’t get a harsh winter where I am. I’ve thought about lettuce, maybe I’ll try some of the baby greens or maybe even micro greens- I love those! Ground cherries– My husband would love those! Need to find some! Thanks for the suggestions!July 29, 2010 at 1:04 am #29552AnonymousInactive
Not sure how these would do in a container, but I think asparagus is delicious straight from the garden (raw), and as long as you are not doing the normal spring harvesting (ie. letting most of the spears make fronds), I think you would be fine eating the spears throughout the summer.
