Where are you located (what climate Zone)? I have seen them grown large in warmer zones (like northern California) and even in NYC (Zone 7ish). They can look scraggly for a long period each year, especially when dormant, which is my objection even in warmer spots to letting them get very tall and leggy, but they will in fact do fine unpruned that way unless you’re much colder (like I am).
