I wonder how much and when you are pruning them, and also whether you are giving them any support. At Wave Hill, the famous public garden in the Riverdale section of NYC (Bronx Country), they had a huge ‘Annabelle’ in the flower garden, and they tied her into a corset every year….strong bamboo stakes all around, just inside her perimeter (so they are hidden) and then a network of laces around those to keep her upright. I think the support’s the key to success with this plant.
