The Urgent Garden Question Forum is part of A Way to Garden, but there is a difference between it and the blog itself. Stated simply:
On the blog, I choose the topic and post about it, and readers may wish to comment in response.
On the forum, the subject matter is driven by you. You initiate the conversation, and (hopefully) chime in to help one another and just get acquainted. I will stop in, but not answer every question; this is a place for community-driven discussion about anything reasonable that interests gardeners, and for socializing.
To post on the forum, you must register. The process is simple (link in left column at top). To get a photo to accompany your posts, called a Gravatar, go here.
Four overall things will enhance the experience:
Search before asking a question to see if there’s already a thread (and even maybe an answer!) on that subject.
Scan the list of forums within the system to see which one is the place for your post.
If you want to have general conversation, the General forum would be the best place to begin.
When you do post something, give it a good subject line (title) – so not “A Perennial Question” but “How to Divide Daylilies” or “When to Transplant Peonies.” This makes the topic more accessible to others who may have your answer.
Once you’re in the right spot, here’s some other friendly advice:
This is a place for readers to help one another with questions and answers, and generally converse about gardening and related topics (environmental things, say, or food, or nature or books about such things…). It’s also a place to get better acquainted with one another than is feasible in the comments on the blog; I welcome you to make any good use of it that you see fit, so long as it obeys the simple rules below.
Have fun; it’s free.
Feel at home to use the “General” forum to talk about things that don’t even have to do with gardening, if you like—if you find that anyone else is game to talk knitting or cooking or tell what novel they just read in book club. All fine with me—these are your forums to enjoy. Just keep it nice, please, whatever you talk about.
Yes, it’s true: I am fine with discussing anything you believe other like-minded souls will enjoy, but no porn, no proselytizing, no poor manners, OK?
This is not a place for advertising the diet product in your latest info-mercial or selling performance-enhancing drugs.
That said, feel free to recommend garden-related products or services here in the appropriate thread of conversation…once you are a bona fide member who’s been participating with contributions. Meaning:
Don’t show up Day 1 with selling something in mind, or ever arrive with that as your sole intent. The rule here is give and take.
First contribute to the forum, earning the respect of the community—and then feel free to also tell us about your new book, or your brother-in-law’s lawncare business, or the handmade birdbaths we can order on your Etsy store. Wonderful. I can’t wait to see those birdbaths….just don’t start there, or overdo it.
Answer a question for someone, why don’t you? That would be the nicest contribution of all.
Even once you’re an active member, don’t start posting what amount to multiple ads (commercial links) all over the place.
Anyone who confuses this for a substitute for paid advertising will have their account revoked by me, Margaret Roach. Anyone who joins and quickly starts posting self-serving or off-topic links, or simply commercial links galore is out, too, as is anyone who gets ugly with another reader. Like I said, keep it nice.
Pretend you are in a room full of nice people at a party or reception, and do what you’d do there: be polite, “read” the room first, get to know everyone. They’ll want more of your birthbaths or garden-design help or shop from your seed catalog with delight if they like you first, trust me.
Uploading of photos is no longer part of the UGQ Forum functionality. In order to have a smoother-running system with less spam, I (Margaret Roach) chose a new platform and for the moment had to sacrifice that feature.
Thanks for your visit, and please come again soon.

I really like the new forum. And I’m so excited to learn that WP has its own BB option now. This makes things easier. Thanks, Margaret for all of your work here. I love what you’ve done with the place.March 4, 2010 at 2:28 am #29195
Thanks, gardengrl. Yes, bbPress seemed like the right move…and I hope to add in some other functionality from their BuddyPress suite before long, once we get this first bit fully functional (and I learn how to run it, tee hee). Thanks for your encouragement.November 9, 2010 at 8:45 pm #29619
Out of courtesy, I simply wanted to “introduce” myself to everyone and note to Margaret that I have indeed read the rules related to “etiquette” related to posting in the forum. I look forward to offering relevant gardening-related “advice” based upon my gardening experience as well as to read the advice provided by other members! Thanks!
