If the pot is big enough, like a whiskey barrel, anything goes. Otherwise stick to the “determinate” (meaning not so vigorous and vinelike as “indeterminate” ones, but reaching a maximum size after they set a flower cluster at their terminal growing point), or even to the ones labeled for containers (see below). So-called “patio” type tomatoes are a sub-set of the determinates.
