The biggest mistake with newly planted Clematis of any kind is just letting them develop a spindly shoot or two rather than first encouraging a strong root system. In late winter/early spring the first couple of years, prune the plant back hard. I can’t tell not seeing it if that means to 8 or to 12 or to 18 inches on your particular plant, not knowing how big it was when you started and is now.
You want to cut just above some strong leaf buds, and then offer the plan support regularly as it grows this year. Repeat next spring (at least).
