I think it depends on whether you’re a gambler. I don’t think there’s anything wrong in picking up a few seedlings from a nursery and plopping them into the ground to see what happens; I would not want to put my whole flat of carefully-brought-from seed-heirlooms in the ground at this time of year. Plant what you’re ready to lose; you might win, and your loss won’t hurt too much. It might be interesting to plant a couple now, a couple in two weeks, and see what the difference in production is. The earlier ones might bear earlier; the later ones might catch up. If you pay attention, next year you can apply the results to your next experiment–I mean, garden.
