a video beyond description, and a book giveaway

WHAT INSPIRES YOU, AND BRINGS YOU PEACE? For me it’s nature, solitude, the chance to write again. It’s also discovering accidental teachers like Alice Herz-Sommer, who may inadvertently be the most inspirational “motivational speaker” I’ve ever heard. Alice, the subject of an upcoming documentary, turns 107 years old this month, and is the oldest living Holocaust survivor—with the most positive life view imaginable, in no small part fueled by her passion for music. “Music is god,” she says, and I agree. May we all be so blessed to relish each day as Alice does. To celebrate her birthday, I offer a copy of my upcoming book–just tell us in the comments what inspires you and brings some peace, won’t you? <–Update: the video was removed from public use 11/11 because of an overwhelming response, its creator says; this is one he has posted instead:

I’ll keep an eye out for the return of the original; the new one bears no comparison. Meantime, there are two BBC radio interviews from a few years back if you want to get further acquainted with Alice: Part 1 and Part 2.

I’ll select a winner at random on Wednesday, November 10; entries close at midnight Tuesday the 9th. As ever, I’ll accept entries that don’t include any details beyond, “Count me in,” but I’d love to hear your answers if you’re willing to share.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be offering books that inspire me, and more advance copies of my own. I’ve got some favorites on order, so stay tuned.

Living in harmony with nature. In the spring I call this “watching the leaves unfurl”, in the summer “watching tomatoes grow”, in the fall “watching the leaves fall off the trees” and in the winter it’s a toss up between “watching the birds at the feeder” and “watching snowflakes fall”. With all the other activities going on, taking the time to watch nature’s cycle brings me peace.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of hiking “Old Rag” in the Virginia Blue Ridge. Hiking through the natural landscape made was an inspiring experience and made me feel very much at peace and more connected to the natural world. Love your blog. Sorry that I couldn’t watch the video today….apparently it has been removed.

Other women inspire me. There are so many smart, funny, creative women in the world and I love reading their books and blogs and seeing how they bring beauty into their lives and into the lives of the people they love.

I am finding peace & being inspired by taking ballroom dance lessons, taking care of myself and doing something that feels good, is healthy and makes me very happy. Of course, I also find tremendous peace being in nature, God’s creations, as much as possible. Taking care of the earth is healing for the soul & heart. :)

Thank you all for your wonderful range of answers. I have a wonderful time reading them as they appear, like an unfolding conversation about a subject so close to me right now.

And the winner (chosen at random using the tool at random [dot] org)is: Kat White.

There will be more advance copies at the start of the month, and other books that I want to share meanwhile. Stay tuned, and thanks again.

The video was very moving. Thank you so much. And thank you for your inspiring, informative, and fun blog. I always read it all and check out all your beautiful photos.

I’m a pilot and photographer. I take photos from my small plane. That’s when/where I find peace. One place, anyway.

  6. “This video no longer available due to copyright claim , by…”! The quibbling in that echelon of the “professional” world NEVER ends does it?!
When did the rules of success include: “The higher one climbs, the more insecure about yourself you MUST become?”
Ought that critical detail be the other way around so, co-creating success in business can continue to expand?
One of the smart ones you are, Ms Roach for getting out with your own hide! Kudos!

I am choosing to comment on this topic before watching the video.
I know that i will be further inspired in watching and reading this topic.

What inspires me and brings me Peace?
It is in the knowledge that i am created for A Good Purpose…
I dont know what that Purpose is (as i am just entering my journey).
Surviving my own hellish nightmare with continuous consequences…
Which might have the capacity to destroy all that i hold sacred…
I have become acquainted with a powerful spirit within…
My strength to endure astounds my sense of who i thought i was…
It is in exploring my natural born talents, that i have found freedom.

  8. Susan Rees says:

Sitting, silently sitting, anytime, anywhere, silencing discursive thought and coming face to face, in my mind’s eye, with someone, like yourself, who has gone before me on a scarey journey and discovered peace in following her heart. That brings me incredible peace.

  9. Wesley Davidson says:

Peace is found in making the most of the simplest moments, in realizing that even in the worst situations there are constants in life that make it all worthwhile.

  10. Lindy McLain says:

I find peace under my electric throw. Once my body warms up, I can drift into thought………..about my children, my family, my dog my home. I good cup of coffee in one hand, a good book in the other…….PEACE.
