I’M OPENING my garden on Saturday June 3 from 10 AM to 4 PM as part of a weekend of events in my Hudson Valley, N.Y., community, that also includes the spectacular garden of Peter Bevacqua and Stephen King nearby and many other events.
Here at my Copake Falls garden all day with a truckload of irresistible botanical goodies will be Broken Arrow Nursery. They will be accepting advance phone orders, too, between now and Wednesday, May 31, if there is something special you simply must have. Their website; phone is (203) 288-1026.
All ticket sales from my garden will be donated to two local nonprofits I love: the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program in nearby Ghent, N.Y., and Turtle Tree Seed in Copake.
And there’s much more:
Those of you who read my “New York Times” garden columns will remember the story I did about the Bevacqua-King garden in Claverack, NY (above). It’s a dramatic juxtaposition of formal and wild, and a must-visit, and will be open from 10-4 on June 3, too. Plus: a sale of gently used garden and cooking books will take place there.
All ticket sales and book-sale proceeds will be donated to the Claverack Library.
We’re also delighted to welcome Annie Novak of New York Botanical Garden, a leading expert on soil health and composting, who will do a morning soil class and an afternoon one on composting nearby.
There are a total of 20 events locally June 3 and June 4; the whole list is on The Workshop Experience Weekend website, a collaboration among a few neighbors (including me!). We hope you’ll make a day (or weekend) of it.

I love the concept of this book, helps people think it is not just all about me, me, me…
