I’ve waited perhaps three or four years for my stands of umbrella leaf, or Diphylleia cymosa, to shape up and start to amount to something in a moist (not wet), shaded area of my garden. Now some of the clumps, like this one, are 2 feet tall or more (friends in the Pacific Northwest say it gets to 3 feet for them), and widening. This cousin of the mayapple (Podophyllum) is native to the Appalachians, and produces white flowers as you can see in May. But what I like is its structure: big leaves on tall stems. And most of all, what you don’t see (yet), which is that it will form blue-black fruits on red petioles later on. I promise to show them when it’s time. Astonishing. Check in Sources for Seneca Hill, which sells it.
