‘Carol Mackie,’ a hybrid burkwoodii daphne, has near-white flowers flushed with pink. But it’s their scent, not their appearance, and best of all the plant’s underlying foliage, variegated green edged in gold, that I like this small shrub for. It grows to several feet high and wide…and then sometimes simply falls apart just when it’s really looking good, an all-too-common experience with various daphnes. I’m on my third generation of Carol Mackies as a result. I suspect I’ll go a few more rounds.

I’m not a huge fan of white in the garden either, but these are all beautiful, especially the rhododendron.
