The American fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus, is just coming into bloom here. I grow a pair, a boy and a girl (this is her in the photo), because what I really love about these 12- to 20-foot native trees are the female’s large, dark blue fruits in fall (and she needs him to make those fruits). Shop for your fringe tree couple in fall, so you can pick a really showy female while she’s in fruit. The size really varies from individual to individual.
