Welcome, Mel. I hate to play favorites, but the Johnny's catalog (ask for a print copy too) has the best growing information with each kind of plant (how to grow a pepper, a tomato...) as well as a great range of seed. Start there, then branch out to the others in my source list (on the bottom left of the blog pages). The Johnny's print version has little how-to entries with each seed they offer; very helpful. Fedco is likewise full of info. And don't forget to ask in the Forum if you need more help (or here in comments). Nice to meet you, and come back soon.

With all of this info, my biggest problem is where's the best place to get the seeds for the novice gardener? There are oh so many choices!

Thanks for all the great tips at this neediest time of year for gardening novices. I'm following your advice with my tomatoes, this year. I waited until mid-April to start the seeds and I'm watering from the bottom (and using a heat mat). I feel like I'm out on a limb, starting this late instead of deep-sinking my usual leggy March starters, but I'll take your word for it!
