‘Blue Bronze,’ part of English breeder Floranova’s ‘Velour Series,’ is a viola I grow every year for its distinctive color combination and tidy, compact habit. Even when the late-spring heat comes on, it doesn’t seem to stretch as quickly as some others I have tried, giving me more weeks or enjoyment for my efforts.

Whiskey barrels? I am so relieved to know they are not passé. To me, they have always been icons of country life. I now feel that I have “permission” to use them.

Well, they are well-priced, don’t crack in winter, and are huge…all of which is good. I’m voting in favor of them. I use them near the little barn/garage building, but if I lived in a log house, for instance, I think they’d be OK nearer by, too. I will ask Martha if it’s OK if you are worried. ;-)

Whiskey barrels seem like a great choice for a container in the correct setting (outside a barn, exterior building such as a garden shed). However, flanking the entrance to a brick Colonial…hmmmm, probably not the best choice!

Love the blog, here. YOur gardens seem so complete and diverse.

Many thanks for the kind words. Like I always say, if you stay somewhere 20-plus years and keep digging holes, this is what happens. (It doesn’t hurt to have been a major-league plant addict, of course, who has grown, and sometimes killed, everything great-looking that she could get her hands on.)

like barrel too: they don’t crack and I don’t need to overwinter them.

Bravo for the use of barrels! They certainly have their place in container gardener’s supply of options.
