Though it’s not quite open yet, I love this pre-full bloom moment in the annual cycle of the siebold viburnum, a rangy large shrub or small tree of perhaps 15 feet tall and 10 or 12 wide. Its fruit is rosy-red turning purple-black, but even when the fruit is all gobbled by birds, a network of bright red fruiting stems adds some interest. Viburnum sieboldii is easy to identify: just crush a leaf, and take a whiff. Green peppers!
