The next wave of viburnums is coming on now, led by the showy doublefiles (V. plicatum tomentosum, including cultivars like ‘Shasta’ and ‘Mariesii’ and smaller ones like ‘Summer Snowflake’). Besides the beautiful May flowers, doublefiles feature hot-colored fruit (best fruit set is achieved from cross-pollination, so think multiples and not too far apart), and purple-red fall foliage color. I’d list sizes for the cultivars I mentioned…OK, they’re presumably 8-10 feet, 10-12 feet, and 4-6 feet or so I’ve read…except that I’ve never grown one that stayed the size it was supposed to be, either in height or width. No matter, just more of a good thing, but do allow it space (especially sideways, since these are decidedly horizontal plants).
