Geranium phaeum is called “the mourning widow,” for its downward-facing, very dark purple blossoms that dangle about foliage that’s marked with a similarly dark chevron. I grow it in shade and sun, and it will sow itself around, some individuals proving more or less showy than others, with darker markings. After bloom, the plant will seem to have stretched up and is quite ungainly, so I whack it back and a tidy, new flush of the handsome foliage emerges to keep me company the rest of the season.
