The ‘Royal Cloak’ barberry has to be one of the great colorful-foliage shrubs of all time: an 8-footer or thereabouts with the deepest wine foliage spring through fall, and screaming golden flowers in May. I’ve cut back my plants, grown originally from tiny rooted cuttings, twice in the 10 years I’ve had them, and nobody’s made a peep.
