h. ‘sum and substance’

h. 'sum and substance'

Perhaps my favorite hosta, ‘Sum and Substance’ has chartreuse leaves that can reach 2 feet across each and size up into a clump exceeding 6 feet wide. Quite something, and they’re pleated to add texture to the very pretty picture to boot.

Hi, Margaret! I’m still more or less here. My Sum and Substance has never got very far, though it comes up faithfully every year, probably because it’s under a red oak. But I mostly wanted to tell you that I moved my dwarfish stewartia and it never blinked an eye, the roots being still more or less where they’d been when I’d planted it (as directed) several years before. It looks far happier as well, now that it doesn’t have to pretend it’s the biggest guy on the block. A seedling from the redbud that had flourished there before being mowed down by a guy driving through our hedge in a stolen car is taking over.

Hi, Emilie. Yes, that big hosta will want all the moisture and nutrients that I bet he tree roots are sucking up (leaving none for the hosta). This year with monsoons here I have noticed that many things that are under trees, in the roots, have done better because there’s so much rain even the trees cannot use it all. Good news about the Stewartia!
