I SAW MY FIRST COPIES of “The Backyard Parables” today—and even though it’s not out officially till January 15, ‘tis the season to be generous. Here are two ways you can win one of the first books off the presses:
1. GOODREADS [DOT] COM, like a giant virtual book club, is hosting a giveaway of five copies of “The Backyard Parables.” You have to be a Goodreads member, which is free—and a great resource for any reader. I’m a member, and so are many of my author friends. Enter their giveaway by clicking here.
2. RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, I’ve got five books to share, too. Here’s how that will work:
I’ll use the random-number tool on random [dot] org to select one winner a day from December 26-30, at 6 PM Eastern daily. The rules:
- You must be a subscriber to my email newsletter to win. (If you’re not yet, it’s free—all you do is put your email in the little “bubble” at the top right of any page on the blog, just above the green frog, then click the gray “JOIN…” button below that…or click here to get started.
- To enter, comment below by telling me something (besides my book!) that was on your holiday-gift wishlist.
- You can only enter once.

I watched with envy as my sister & husband unwrapped windchimes they had given to each other for Christmas. But then I unwrapped the gift my daughter selected for me (purchased with money I had given to her for the sole purpose of buying a gift for me, as she is an intellectually disabled young adult). It was a hummingbird feeder, the perfect gift for my country home!
A call from my daughter who I have not heard from in 16 months. Still wishing and hopeful.
wanted a fence to contain my new garden i want to plant full of sunflowers to supplement my chickens feed i am older and on fixed income, Recierved a check from daughter in law for 200.00 dollars, i love your site love the e mails happy gardening in 2013
My wish is for my husband to get over his winter cold so he can finish the ceiling of the greenhouse he built for me using pallets and old windows. I’m so lucky to have him!
I asked for but did not receive simply gift certificates from my favorite nurseries: broken arrow nursery (Hamden), o’brien nurserymen (granby, CT) and silver spring nursery (Bloomfield, CT). Then in the spring I could choose my own 2013 plants for garden holes.
I didn’t ask for anything since we did a huge front yard landscape design last summer. It’s been exciting to see he winter changes. I’ve been delighted with frost on my grasses that sparkle in the morning sun.
I asked for gift certificates to my faorite nursery and I asked for chipper/shredder so that I could hred all the limbs that fall on the lower side of the property instead of renting one every year
A paperbark maple and a crabapple ‘Prairiefire’ were on my holiday wish list. And Santa came through! As soon as I can dig the ground, the nursery will deliver!
Yotam Ottolenghi’s Plenty for all those veggies we’re growing. :)
We actually decided as a family to not exchange gifts this year. It was nice, we adopted a needy family through the Salvation Army and blessed them instead.
A copy of Fred McGourty’s “Perennial Gardener” since I gave my old and well-loved copy to a friend. This was the book that drew me from veg and herbs to perennials, shrubs, and even the much maligned annual! (and yes, I did receive a copy!)
AND THE FOURTH OF FIVE DAILY WINNERS IS….
Carolyn (hoping for a proper place to store her onions). Congratulations! Will email her now…
“womens shoreline fleece ponytail hat” (or anything!) from DULUTH TRADING thier clothes are great for garden choores or any outdoor chores in heat and cold! Just discovered them last year. I recommend all gardeners to check out thier website (i should get a commision!)
I got the best gift from my mom – bat guano in sturdy canvas buckett.
My biggest wish, which I did receive!, was to spend Christmas with my brother and niece – she is already six, and we hadn’t spent a Christmas with her yet!! (they live 1200 miles away…) Truly the best gift. :)
My recipe for happiness has always been no expectations and therefore no wishlists.
But my favorite gifts this year- heat, water, light and time with family and friends after 3 days with no power! (And my husbands quick clean up of the tree down in our front yard)
Our Southern California rains came early this year, followed by a bout of warm weather. Perfect recipe for early weeds in the yard. I asked Santa for a strong young person to help me battle the weeds as my 74 year old bones no longer move as they used to. Still awaiting a reply from Santa.
We don’t exchange gifts, but planted a Nellie Stevens Holly in the front yard as our gift to each other.
From my Secret Santa, I received several of what I had put on my Elfster wish list as “choices” ……..never expecting to receive more than ONE of those items, let alone several. There were two beautiful flower vases, and two beautiful SETS of candlesticks, and more. My secret santa turned out to be one of my five beautiful daughters…..the one who always goes way overboard for the name she draws! Shes’s also the one with no children, so she really loves giving nice things!
For Christmas I wished for the top of my 150+year-old pear tree, broken in a freak snowstorm in Oct 2011, to grow back, but of course when I looked out on Christmas morning I was disappointed to find that it hadn’t! –Ronny
I wished to have my daughter-in-law’s tumor removed and they are still dragging their heels on doing something. She is in so much pain! The best gifts were the unexpected ones, a dolphin necklace from my husband and a heart hoya from my son. May this be thart of a much better year!
I wish to plant some native shrubs and plants in my front yard.
AND THE FIFTH DAY’S WINNER IS….
Boom. (Who asks for a good bottle of wine and a good book.)
All I wanted for Christmas was love & peace for me & my family…
Margaret….HELP! Too much clutter has eaten my plans for your terrific lawn chairs! Please help! I am ready to buy and build! Thanks so very very much!
Sharon
I received it early…a leaf mulcher.
Plant light so I can start my own veggie seeds this year.
