Do you mean the large-flowered blue ones, and do you know what variety you have? You’ll find a discussion of care of mophead or macrophylla hydrangeas (the big blue types) in this thread in the Forums: http://awaytogarden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=40&hilit=prune+hydrangeas As you will see if you read through the conversation, the general time is just after they have bloomed, meaning late summer. Pruning now will reduce or eliminate your 2009 buds (and the flowers they contain). Note that varieties like ‘Endless Summer’ have slightly different behavior, which is why I ask if you know what kind you have.
