I’m lucky enough to have bought a house two years ago on a flat, relatively fertile half acre. I’ve spent the last two years cutting down the shrubs that were eating my house and reclaiming the large, abandoned vegetable garden.
Now that I’ve got my feet under me, I’d love to come up with an overall design for my yard so it has flow, areas with different personalities, etc. I can’t afford a landscape designer. Wondering if anyone has found a computer program that is helpful for this purpose or a very detailed and easy to follow book or two. I’d like to map my yard so I can really come up with a plan, not just plop things about in a random fashion!
I have a similar situation to you- half acre lot that is basically undeveloped. Most of the plants that were here when we moved in have been neglected. I don’t know of any computer programs to use. But good old pen and paper has been working so far. I’m the type of person that would use a computer program if there were a good one, but I’ve just been sketching a lot recently.
I know one thing I’ve spent the last few months thinking about over the winter– what do I want out of my garden? How do I want to enjoy it? What types of plants do I enjoy and enjoy growing? I think once you establish what you want out of your garden, it begins to come together. Start making lists of the types of plants you like, do lots of book and online research and see which way your tastes sway you. I always say “dream like the sky is the limit and then step back and take a good look at it and see how much of it you can actually make reality.” Most of the time, much more can happen than you think!
Thank you, Lucy. I’m trying to decide what major features I’d like to work around – a patio, pergola, pond – all ambitious plans! I was thinking a computer program would be helpful for tracking plant rotations in the vegetable garden, when I planted perennials, etc. I have tried tracking it on paper, but don’t always keep up with it and it’s hard to get it in “at a glance” form. But I’ll keep plugging away!
