Hi Everyone, I’m so excited to find this forum. I do not garden. I would consider myself "pre-novice" even.
My house is a classic 100 year old colonial, pretty but farm-house colonial, not grand/formal colonial. When we bought it they had these horrible beds made of railroad ties and a few burning bush shrubs that we ripped out, but there’s been nothing for a few years and it looks really sad.
I would love something to put something in but don’t know what. I don’t care for bushes or shrubs. I think something low maintenance, and ideally not extremely expensive, would be best as I’d like to invest money and weeding time in starting a vegetable garden rather than flowers and beds in the front.
Would doing big beds of lush ferns in the front (with direct sun part of the day but a lot of shade too) and wrapping around the left (shady northern exposure) side be a nice, low maintenance solution?
Would anyone be able to suggest a place in Columbia or Berkshire county where I could find ferns that are not incredible costly? We have woods in the back. Is it an option to dig some up and transfer?
