Re: Deer (Blacklegged) Ticks
I have given up trying to prevent contact w/ticks as they are everywhere now here (other than the fact that I mow an even larger area around the house than I once did).
Instead I have become hyper-vigilant about self-check…shower after working outside, discard clothing, check self again in morning, and so on.
I have a very inexpensive “Tick Twister” from the health-food store (or online or pet store or drug store probably, too) and I take them off myself and the cat that way, which is much more effective than cruder tactics at removal should one dig in.
Key is to remember that they will often wander around for a day deciding where to bite, so bringing them in on your clothes (by not changing) and checking yourself just once won’t do it…they may be in the clothes or just waiting to explore when you’re not looking. I am more apt to find them the morning after than right away, scary to say.
But I have no tricks for making the yard tick-free.
