doodles by Andre Jordan

IF FOR EVEN A MOMENT ANY ONE OF YOU THINKS OF A WAY TO GARDEN as the shelter in dear Andre’s latest doodle, then I am one happy garden writer. I know at the start of the difficult season we said we’d stick together, and we have. From all the blog activity these last months–your visits and clicks, your comments–you’d hardly have known it was winter. I can say with conviction that my “behavioral issues” and “utter frustration” are a lot less severe thanks to these visits with Andre and all of you. And remember: the days are longer!

YES, MY HAIR IS A BIT STATIC-PRONE AT THE MOMENT, dear Andre Jordan, thank you very much; I asked you to please not make fun of it. More important, though: There is, and forever has been, only one Jack the Demon Cat, and my Jack (who has a drug problem) wants no part of morning walks with Mommy; he sleeps by day and hunts by night. Are these doodles of yours meant to be cartoons or something?

the_seed_interventionTHAT ANDRE JORDAN IS UNCANNY, WITH HIS ABILITY to see what I am doing from halfway across the nation. I am beginning to worry that he has somehow placed a 24/7 Skype video device here in my dining room–is that your secret, dear doodling Andre? Yes, it’s seed-mania time, and I am having a hard go of it–trying to avoid doing just what the lady in the nightgown has fallen prey to. You? Being prudent and disciplined, or on a wild binge? You can tell us; we’re among friends. Oh, and a P.S. on this one: Read more…

doodle by andre: white out

January 7, 2010

blank_thelostgardenerIAM FEELING A LITTLE ADRIFT (IN A DRIFT?) MYSELF. I admit it. And then this doodle shows up from Andre Jordan, and I was like, yes, that’s it: I feel lost. No wonder, when I can’t even see the pathway ahead of me. Ah, snow. “I would like it to stop snowing now,” Andre told me the character in the doodle said to him, but I know it’s barely January, and snow is actually a kindness to the plants that sleep beneath it. Sigh. How are you holding up over there, friends? Shall we send out a search party?

thankyou_postcardTHIS WEEK’S DOODLE IS REALLY A POSTCARD, one to send to the beloved garden in appreciation for a year of its devoted service and joy. Thanks, Andre Jordan, for just the right thing at just the right moment–one less thing on my to-do list, now that you have “send card to garden” covered. This week I’m also remembering your doodles of Christmases past: the controversial love-a-gnome campaign, for instance, and that tender one of the robin red-breast — remember it? Thank you for celebrating so many moments here with us; the best to you and Mrs. Andre and the delicious, four-legged Pickle.

final_mow_borderHE READ IT IN MY DECEMBER CHORES LIST: Make the last mowing before winter a short cut, way down low. And even though the snow fell before he got to that task, the guy in the doodle (is that you, Andre Jordan?) didn’t want to skip a single to-do I’d suggested, apparently. Poor sod. (Get it? Sorry; I watch far too much BBC programming.)

conifersNOBODY LIKES TO BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED, including plants, and those who did the under-appreciating (read: me) the last few months are now in hot water as the weather chills out. I sense an uprising about to happen, a conifer uprising. Thanks, Andre Jordan, for reminding them it’s time for a hissy-fit. But you are correct: Conifers are for life, not just for Christmas!

ruby_starsYOUR NEW JAPANESE MAPLE MAY NOT HAVE ROOTED well, but it sounds like the Buffalo Springfied lyric paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep has rooted itself thoroughly into consciousness, hasn’t it? If we recall correctly, first you were going to pass the hot (homegrown?) potato for your plant problems back to the nursery the things came from, and now onto your neighbor? Oh, dear. (Is that the same neighbor whose fence you coveted, by the way, and considered stealing?) When I’m looking for reasons for why my plant died, I just refer back to this favorite poem; it mercifully has something to explain every situation. Thanks, dear doodler Andre Jordan, and we will light a candle for your tree. Just know this: It happens to the best of us, no matter who lives next door.

final mowing by andre jordanWE GARDENERS HAVE SPOKEN OUR FEELINGS OPENLY together here about mowing, but I guess The Andres hadn’t had the talk yet–the talk about how some lovers with macho names like Toro and Snapper are fair-weather friends. Uh-oh, the mower’s about to go into cold storage, and *she* isn’t ready for the separation. Or maybe the “such a look” is because *he* is supposed to be doing the mowing? Thanks, Andre Jordan, for another weekly garden doodle. Let us know how it all sorts out.

bulbgate_550WHAT DO YOU SAY (AFTER ‘THANK YOU’) when someone sends you something thoughtful but, well, um, you’re just not an orange person? This latest doodle from Andre Jordan reminds me of all those holiday gifts I never wore but just couldn’t throw out, either. Of course, I actually like pink with orange, but then there’s no accounting for taste, is there?

the_woodsWHAT A DIFFERENCE A DOODLE MAKES. Sixteen months ago I asked a stranger across an ocean if I could run an illustration of his (above) on my just-born blog, because I’d adopted its words as a motto for my new rural life adventure. Then exactly one year ago tomorrow, that stranger—by then a friend, and living in America—officially became a weekly columnist, part of the haphazard happy A Way to Garden family that also includes Jack the Demon Cat, the garden itself, and you. Won’t you wish me and Andre Jordan a happy anniversary? A somewhat-deranged new doodle, and Andre’s take on Year 1 together await if you do: Read more…
