Another of the many wonderful Helleborus orientalis hybrids bred by my friend Charles Price of Seattle (and as if I didn’t have enough, another crop of his young crosses just arrived this spring as plugs!). After the flowers are done, handsome evergreen foliage will create a low-maintenance groundcover all season long, until I cut it off in late winter to better showcase the next crop of blooms.

Is it okay to remove extra foliage as late as May to showcase the flowers of the hellebores?

    Cathy,
    Welcome.
Yes, fine to cut off the old foliage anytime–I do it before bloom just because it’s easier than cutting around the flower stalks on my big old plants.
Just be sure to leave the fresh emerging leaves for this year.
    Enjoy.
    Margaret
