Dirca palustris, or leatherwood, is an early blooming native shrub shaped like a small tree of just 4 to 6 feet and half as wide. Its bloom time coincides with other natives like Cornus mas and Lindera benzoin (or the decidedly non-native Forsythia). The only mail-order source I have found is mailordernatives.com. I got my original plant at the New England Wildflower Society shop.
