Dicentra cucullaria

Dicentra cucullaria

Dicentra cucullaria, or Dutchman’s breeches, is a native cousin of the common bleeding heart (and also of Corydalis, another plant in this week’s gallery). An ephemeral perennial that will tuck itself back in underground when summer comes, it is happy in the dappled light under Magnolia ‘Ballerina’ (which see in this gallery, too) in early spring. They bloom, and live, together.
