I love the native wildflower Mertensia virginica, or Virginia bluebells, both when its bells are tightly closed and colored lavender, or when they fully open (shown) and are a wild color of blue with hint of purple. Grow it in shade or half-shade and it will spread itself around in the nicest way over time, never taking up much room but adding lots of early color.
