A perennial pea, Lathyrus vernus blooms with the first Euphorbias and middle to late Narcissus. It is a delicate thing that will self-sow in the garden, and there are purple- or pink-flowered selections.

    Paige,
This little perennial will sow around the garden, and can be grown from seed (don’t know a source) or ordered as a plant from somewhere like Seneca Hill (see source list) or Terrapin-Gardens dot com I think. I believe that’s where my first plants came from…Terrapin is out in Seattle, and friends from there brought me some years ago. Have a look.

    Dear Margaret
I was very taken with your photo and description of Lathyrus Vernus Purpera and was gearing up for the “search”–But–I was lucky enough to find mature healthy Lathyrus Vernus/Purpera Plants—at Loomis Creek Nursery–Those guys are so “au currant”

    Kathy,
This is great news for all our nearby gardeners. And a great plant. Welcome to A Way to Garden, and thanks for the tip.
    Margaret
